With a proceeds of $300,000, a thief steals hundreds of iPhones by exploiting a security loophole

A convicted thief has revealed how he stole hundreds of iPhones and made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars by exploiting a security flaw.

Aaron Johnson, 26, who is serving a nearly eight-year sentence in a maximum security prison, told the Wall Street Journal that all phone thefts involved “passwords,” which were used to steal money from their owners by exploiting the banking apps on the phone, according to Alhurra.

Johnson and a crew of associates worked in Minneapolis for several months in 2021 and 2022, going from bar to bar, befriending young men and women, getting close enough to them to find out the “password” to unlock the phone, then stealing the device, then stealing money from banking apps, and then selling the device itself.
